BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery)
A Dental undergraduate degree program is called BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery). After MBBS, BDS is one of the most sought-after programs. Five years, including the internship year, make up the course of study. The Dental Council of India, where all dentists must register to practice after completing their education, regulates BDS in India. Students who aspire to become dentists in public or private hospitals must take this course. BDS’s main focus is on educating and exposing students to the dentistry sciences and procedures.
Four years of classroom education and one year of required rotational internships make up the five-year curriculum. The BDS curriculum is governed by the Dental Council of India (DCI). To be accepted into one of the 313 government, private, and recognized institutions in the country that offer a total of 26,949 BDS places, candidates must show up and pass the National Eligibility Cumulation Entrance Exam (NEET).
Students that enroll in the BDS program study dentures, dental issues, and surgery. Students may use the prefix “Dr.” before their names once they have earned their BDS. Anyone can practice dentistry if they obtain a license from DCI. The primary goal of BDS is to introduce and instruct students in the principles and practices of dentistry. 4 years of classroom instruction and 1 year of a required rotating internship make up the 5-year curriculum.
BDS Eligibility Standards:
To be admitted to the BDS programs offered by institutes and universities, applicants must meet specific standards. Some of the requirements for eligibility include:
- The applicants must have completed Class 12 with PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) with 50% marks.
- The Candidates must be under the age of 17.
- The applicants must be NEET qualified.
MDS (Master of Dental Surgery)
A master’s degree program in Dentistry is called “Master of Dental Surgery” or “MDS.” This course can be taken by graduates of the Dental Science program to gain a thorough understanding of dental problems. The MDS program lasts three years. Individuals who have already earned a postgraduate degree that has been approved by DCI may enroll in this two-year program. The MDS degree is available in several specializations, including prosthodontics and crown and bridge, periodontology, conservative dentistry and endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, and oral medicine and radiology. The MDS degree is recognized by the Dental Council of India (DCI).
Students study dental issues for preserving good oral health as well as specializations for disorders of the teeth, jaw, and other facial tissues in the MDS course. Colleges admit students based on their performance on the entrance exam. To be admitted to the MDS program, applicants must achieve a minimum score. Students are easily hired by hospitals, medical schools, and private nursing homes after completing the course.
MDS Eligibility Standards:
Applicants who want to enroll in the MDS program must meet the following requirements:
- Applicants must hold a BDS degree from a recognized dental institution or institute in India.
- Students must have to finish their BDS internship before enrolling in the MDS program.
- For admission to the MDS program, certain dental colleges specify minimum grades in the qualifying degree exams, such as 55% overall in the BDS course.
- Applicants must have earned merit positions on any of the dental entrance exams.
Entrance Examinations for MDS Admission:
To be eligible for admission to dental institutes and colleges in India, candidates must pass medical entrance exams to be admitted to MDS programs. The following list includes some MDS entry exams:

Community Dentistry | By coordinated community actions, dental problems can be prevented, controlled, and promoted. |
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery | Treatment of disorders, injuries, and abnormalities of the human jaws and related oral and face tissues through surgery and complementary methods |
Oral Pathology | Mouth Diseases: what they are, how they happen, and what they do. It relates the anatomical and physiological changes brought on by oral illnesses to their clinical manifestation. |
Oral Medicine and Radiology | Basic diagnostic techniques help identify disorders of the oral tissues that are local or constitutional in origin, as well as their medical management. X-rays are also used in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that are related to orofacial diseases. |
